I’ve never had an issue with these, so no worries there. Installing Dockerįollow the instructions that Docker provides. The first step is installing Debian on your main drive (not your array of drives that you plan to hold your content). Taking The Plunge □♂️ Debian InstallationĪs stated before, I won’t cover this here. Lastly, I wanted to make sure ZFS was supported by Debian and that the array would auto mount without my help. If a container failed, I could have it just restart. By containerizing each service, I was ensuring that there would be no overlapping permission issues, and that the services would have no way of taking each other down. While that may be true, I don’t want to have to manage all of that in the first place. Permissions and group policies became very frustrating when using Freenas. ![]() In addition, I wanted to containerize all of my services. I wanted to keep this structure when I moved to Debian. My ZFS array was always mounted separately from the main operating system. This is a safety mechanism incase of catastrophic failure on the main drive. One thing I was always big on was keeping my media separate from my operating system drive. However, I will cover my general setup, and some specifics that took some fiddling to get right. There are plenty of those tutorials around the web that can be found. I won’t go into how to burn and install Debian here. For these reasons, it seemed like a good fit (aside from glowing endorsements). It also supports most major packages (even though it is a different flavor). This is when I heard of how reliable Debian was.ĭebian is a version of Linux that has grown in popularity recently because of how stable it is. Tie that in with the frequent breakages with updating versions and other headaches with permissions and jails, I decided to look elsewhere. Thus, Freenas’ primary objective of being a good NAS server became quickly obsolete. As I automated more of my media aggregation, the concept of a NAS became less useful. If there was one thing I did do right to begin with, it was ZFS arrays.Ībout a year and a half ago I decided I was done fiddling with Freenas. However, as things like Docker grew in popularity and reliability, I quickly realized I was using the wrong technology for my stack. When I first started, I landed on Freenas as the solution I was going to use. I’ve been running my own personal server for years to manage my media content.
